Men's Soccer Philosophy

Soccer is a team sport, and the members of the team are therefore dependent on each other. If certain players do not carry out their tasks properly on the pitch, then their team will suffer. This means that EACH player has to carry out his basic tasks to the best of his ability, and this requires a disciplined approach on and off the pitch. It is largely a question of details.  Listed below are important guidelines:

  • Arriving early to each team training/match/meeting.  Training starts on time, every time.
  • If arriving late, notify coach prior to training/match/meeting.
  • If unable to attend, notify coach prior to training/match/meeting.
  • If you are injured, notify coach prior to training/match/meeting and make every effort to attend the session so no coaching/information is missed.

Discipline and continuous communication inevitably lead to team success. Players have to learn to put the team's interests first. "Team" is not an assurance that you all like each other, but that you learn about each other's skill and talk to each other about them. This is an offshoot of communication and discipline. A few rules:

  • All players are required to have a positive attitude towards their teammates, Coaches, opponents, referees, administration, faculty, fans, etc.
  • "We are a TEAM FIRST and an individual second"!! Each player is expected to encourage and motivate each other with a positive approach.
  • There will not be any insubordination/disrespect tolerated towards the coaching staff, captains, teammates, faculty members, referees, and opponents.

"You stand out from other players by virtue of your performance. If you play as a team you need to express yourself as a single unit"

“Soccer isn't the same as Bach or Buddhism. But it is often more deeply felt than religion, and just as much a part of the community's fabric, a repository of traditions.”
